Important WikiProject Automobiles Discussion

[edit]

Hello! As a Wikipedia:WikiProject Automobiles member, I just thought you might want to input your opinions on an important discussion we're currently having about whether articles regarding similar vehicles should be merged into one or split by brand. If you would like to comment or read further, please see Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Automobiles#Articles of Similar Vehicles. Thank you in advance for your thoughts and feedback. Hi Solitude, I have another series of FP I would be grateful if you could have a look and tell me what you think. If you don't want to be part of my little sub FPC voting, could you please tell me? Thanks --Fir0002 01:14, 27 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Your Opinion Please!

[edit]

Hi, Solitude

For quite some time I have been uploading multiple images of the same subject as a Featured Picture Candidate, and, unknown (until recently) to me, this was causing considerable problems in the promoting/not promoting stage of the Featured Picture Candidates.

Recently Solipsist informed me of the problem and came up with the suggestion of holding my own semi Featured Picture Candidates page.

I would like you and several others (User:Sj, User:Boffy B, User:Solipsist, User:Chris 73) to be the people who vote in this.

I would greatly appreciate your opinions on the photos.

The link to the page is User:Fir0002/FPCandidates

Thanks --Fir0002 08:12, 16 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Rachelle Waterman as FAC?

[edit]

The Wikipedia logo with the Santa hat on top is cute. Next Halloween, someone should add a scary looking face on it, kinda of like the tradition of putting pumpkins with faces outside your home on that holiday. Maybe for the New Year someone will put a party hat with some party streamers flowing down the side?

Anyways, please see the Featured Article Candidate nomination for the Rachelle Waterman article.

 1. If you approve of this article, write "Support" followed by your reasons.
 2. If you oppose this nomination, write "Object" followed by the reason for your objection.

Thank you for your contribution!

Cheers,

OK, I gave in to your holiday spirit and added your WikiSanta to my user page.

I feel better already.

Vulva pic in Clitoris article

[edit]

Greetings. I am sadened that your contribution to this discussion was to try to stick a troll label on me. What I am attempting to achieve is to challenge the misinterpretation of the vote that was held on the Clitoris talk page. The question asked for the vote was:

QUESTION: Who would vote for replacing the second image on this page with this link? [http://www.vh.org/adult/provider/anatomy/atlasofanatomy/plate36/07femorgans.html anatomical drawing

The vote therefore clearly was either or issue. This one or that one. This is now being (deliberately) misinterpreted as the picture must stay at all costs. What is truly bizarre is that the picture does not even display the subject of the article itself. Sadly your contribution has not been helpful. - Robert the Bruce 03:02, 30 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Video Poker machine payout tables only represent a theoretical payout percentage. The vast majority of gamers cannot achieve that payout percentage because they do not play correctly.

It is essential to draw correctly depending on the content of each dealt hand, and there are strategy tables devised by computer which determine how to do so, depending on the payout table. (Hence you need different strategy tables for different payout tables!)

My ambition is to add such strategy tables to the Video Poker article, but I can't just copy-and-paste such strategies from an existing book due to copyright. To get around that problem, I have an off-the-shelf analytical program that allows the creation of strategy tables based on a weighting of difficulty vs. accuracy. These tables are slightly different than the published ones, but still accomplish the desired positive payoff.

If you're interested in getting a good feel for this, there is a training program called "WinPoker" available from Zamzow Software, (in the U.S.), that allows you to practice, as well as automatically run through a great number of hands using a given payout table and strategy.

Cheers,

Hey, thanks for reminding me of that. I'm a bit too busy/lazy lately, but I'll try and keep up with removing older nominations there now. :-) --Conti| 13:52, Nov 30, 2004 (UTC)

The image at the top of the 1973 energy crisis article adds a lot to the lead-in sections. Nice work. 172 19:59, 30 Nov 2004 (UTC)

I've just done some archiving of Did you know facts at Wikipedia:Recent additions and saw that even though you added some facts, you forgot scores of others. Would you please use the list at Template talk:Did you know the next time, so we're sure no fact is lost in the archiving process? Thanks! :-) Mgm|(talk) 21:00, Nov 30, 2004 (UTC)

Hmm I'm pretty sure I always archive DYK facts to the recent additions section, can you point me where that went wrong, it must have been a glitch, as I'm very aware of the procedure. -- Solitude\talk 21:05, Nov 30, 2004 (UTC)
No clue what happened, but check my edit against yours in the history and you can see what I mean. I guess it's just something to look out for. Mgm|(talk) 21:15, Nov 30, 2004 (UTC)
I've dug up the link here. How come there's just 4 or 5 facts since Opinel knife was featured? That was 1 or 2 weeks ago. If you compare that to my subsequent edit, you can see something is missing. Maybe someone else edited in the mean time? Ah, never mind, I don't blame you, it can be fixed anyway. I'm just curious how it happened. Mgm|(talk) 21:23, Nov 30, 2004 (UTC)
Just as I expected. Didn't expect it to be your fault. Sleep tight, and don't worry about it. :-) Mgm|(talk) 21:37, Nov 30, 2004 (UTC)

I was simply adding the message to each article that was already listed as an FA - there was no editorial decision on my part. Many of those listed items at that time did not go through any process other than somebody adding them and nobody removing them. -- mav 07:54, 1 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Solitude: since your arrival in wikipedia is after the reorganization of the Brilliant Prose section, nowadays the FAC, i understand that you have no clue of how things worked back then. So please, refrain from making comments like misterious additions by mav or Emsworth adding tags, otherwise you are making a fool of yourself. If you want to criticise something, thats ok, but at least know what you are talking about. If you do want to know how things worked, i'll be happy to answer any question because i used, back then, to spend some time in this isseues. Cheers, muriel@pt 13:35, 8 Dec 2004 (UTC)

First, I appreciate the general efforts and yours of improving general quality of the articles. But, the wikipedia was not 400,000 articles all the time and the featured standard evolved. So, please, do not judge peoples decisions then by today's standards, which are the only ones you know. I found your suggestion of Maverick doing mysterious tag additions very close of a personal attack, but i did assume good faith and that is why i wrote the message above. Have fun with Farc, with wikilove, muriel@pt 09:21, 9 Dec 2004 (UTC)

The Humungous Image Tagging Project

[edit]

Hi. You've helped with the Wikipedia:WikiProject Wiki Syntax, so I thought it worth alerting you to the latest and greatest of Wikipedia fixing project, User:Yann/Untagged Images, which is seeking to put copyright tags on all of the untagged images. Thumb pics & taxoboxes

Hi Solitude - I've changed your edit at Scots Pine back to standard taxobox style, it was agreed by the Wikipedia:WikiProject Tree of Life group a while back that thumbed pics don't look good in taxoboxes because of the multiple framing it produces. Mysterious POTD template

[edit]

Happy Wikibreak!

On a more positive use of the term "mysterious", I am curious to know what the POTD template was supposed to do?

I've added it to my user page with the hopes that it will spring to life with something interesting.

So far, it only seems to sit there, with the date showing up. I was kind of hoping it did something more than that.

If you come back before the New Year with a "Happy New Year Wikipedia" logo, I will be sure to place it on my user page!

Common sense in tagging

[edit]

Do you just auto-tag images which don't have copyright information? If this is a human process, please tag images which are clearly public domain with Template:PD-art. I just did so for a few Pompeii images. I would really hate if some obviously PD image got deleted because it was tagged as "unverified".--Eloquence* 05:06, Mar 22, 2005 (UTC)

I Need your help on 'Move Tsushima Islands' Issue

[edit]

Hi! You appear to be an QUALIFIED interested disinterested bystander... Tho' taking a wikibreak, I've seen you around Vfd, iirc. I'm just making the rounds to everyone that has made their mark on Tsushima Islands which lead me to Fg2, (thence to then YOU! Congrats! Booby Prize, but I badly need some responsible People to help me mediate therein that are familiar with things Japanese... errr English! Sorry, but I infer that's still YOU!) in the last month trying to mediate this flaming revert war — I can use your help — Bring lots O water! (Better yet Beer) Frank

This is the message I've been dropping on anyone on the Talk or Article pages since 13 May, I'd appreciate it if you can familarize yourself on the small article and stand-by to jump in on Tuesday with some cogent watersprays from a logical firehose! Thanks for the trouble -- the issue is trivial, (Is proper name plural or singular, Forsooth!) save there seem to be at least two teens in a war going well over three hundred edits in this one month sampling interval, over 70 edits in the past three days.
 • I would appreciate a rational explaination (after you read my Comments in the subject dispute Talk:Tsushima Islands), of the arguement or arguments you consider vital and germane to the discusion and vote. Frankly, MOST all of you are being silly over nothing of particular importance, since both names can be redirected into the one used. I have left a comment concerning my contribution to the article, which contribution — seems to have triggered the current edit and revision wars. For that I apologize, but see the Comments on the vote. I am also taking the liberty of putting the vote section AFTER the Comments about same.
 • Still, I have just spent over four hours of valuable spare time, and would welcome your thoughts after you read and understand the distinction I put forth between a governments termonology as a governing body and a geographical reference like an archepelego, which it certainly is.
 • More to the point, I'd like to see your defense regarding your favorite POV of what I had to say viz a viz the mergest attitude of the senior editors and administrators that frequent the Wikipedia:VfD discussions. To my recollection, I don't recollect any of you hotheads in this dispute ever spending anytime thereon, possibly excepting Mel Etitis, but rarely even then.
 • In any event, I'm neutral here, and have asked that the article be kept EDIT FREE for the next three days by placing The Inuse template into it — I'd copyedited over two and half hours before I suspended that effort the other night because this shameful fued was going on — proper English grammer does depend, unfortunately, on whether one uses the plural or the singular. I saved that on my hard drive, but I don't need to wade through yet another 70 edits to finish the job. As it is, this matter will probably double the time it takes for such a simple job.
 • If you are local to Japan, some history of the canals or Sea-channel is certainly germane to the ongoing discussion, moreover, any cogent arguement you condsider being particularly telling needs to be clearly repeated in the current on going comments if you want them counted on in the vote.
 • I will make sure this message goes to each contributor to the article the past month, so you are not being singled out. Now is the time to take a deep breath, for rational concise summaries, not all the arguing that is so wearisome in 66 printed pages - half a novelette, I'd guess! It's certainly a lot to ask your fellow editors to wade through on a minor issue.
 • I will also personally be making sure that at least a dozen other Administrators I'm acquainted with take a look at the debate after the time below. I will in fact ask for twenty commitments, so be clear and respectful of our time!!!
 • Thankyou for your time, attention, and good professional behaviour. I'll check the Talk state again no sooner than Monday around Noon (UTC), And ask the uninvolved others to do the same. PLEASE BE CONCISE. FrankB || TalktoMe 03:22, 19 Jun 2005 (UTC)

What's the Point?

[edit]

What's the point in leaving people meaningless notes? The article on natural burial has a note attached that states it is not written in the formal tone expected of an Encyclopedia entry. I modified it and made the tone less personal in how it was phrased. I didn't change the substance of the article other than making it less personal and correcting a minor error.

The article was reverted, and I was left a note that stated "Your experiment worked". I attempted to contribute, and my attempt was nullified. My experiment didn't work, or your note to me was not meaningful.

Did it make you feel good to trash someones attempt at a contribution? I hope so.

Unless you have a reasonable explanation, that was my last attempt at a contribution.

Alethias

Unspecified source for Image:Theo van Gogh.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Theo van Gogh.jpg. I notice the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this file yourself, then there needs to be a justification explaining why we have the right to use it on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you did not create the file yourself, then you need to specify where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the file also doesn't have a copyright tag, then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the GFDL-self tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as article name or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Ilse@ 22:47, 4 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Solitude, you were on the list of members at WikiProject Automobiles and we are introducing a new way of listing members, as the old list was becoming too long. Our new method involves having all of our members in a category.

To add yourself to the category just add the userbox to your user page by putting Wiki Auto Project where you want the userbox. Alternatively if you don't like the userbox you can add to your userpage.

Replaceable fair use Image:Jill Ker Conway.jpg

[edit]
Replaceable fair use
Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Jill Ker Conway.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

 1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add , without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
 2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, fair use media which could be replaced by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if not used in an article), per our Fair Use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. High on a tree (talk) 23:26, 4 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:L Ron Hubbard.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:L Ron Hubbard.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it may be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. Cirt (talk) 19:35, 24 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

New version of photograph

[edit]

Hello Solitude,

Long ago, in this edit to my Talk page, you asked me to upload a higher-resolution version of Image:Tazawako.jpg, and I promised to do so ... some day. Today I uploaded a new scan at higher resolution, and with much higher JPEG quality. It's available on Commons as Image:Tazawako.jpg. The names are the same. I've requested deletion of the old, low-quality Wikipedia image; as soon as it happens the new file will automatically take its place. Sorry it took so many years to upload this!

Best regards, Fg2 (talk) 08:05, 25 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

NowCommons: Image:Sea gulls Solitude 1.jpg

[edit]

Image:Sea gulls Solitude 1.jpg is now available on Wikimedia Commons as Commons:Image:Laughing Gulls on sand.jpg. This is a repository of free media that can be used on all Wikimedia wikis. The image will be deleted from Wikipedia, but this doesn't mean it can't be used anymore. You can embed an image uploaded to Commons like you would an image uploaded to Wikipedia, in this case: . Note that this is an automated message to inform you about the move. This bot did not copy the image itself. --Erwin85Bot (talk) 07:07, 19 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Image tagging for File:KingCourthouse.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:KingCourthouse.jpg. The image has been identified as not specifying the source and creator of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. If you don't indicate the source and creator of the image on the image's description page, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided source information for them as well.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. For assistance on the image use policy, see Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 05:55, 26 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on File:L Ron Hubbard.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section I5 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an image which is not under a free license or in the public domain and it has not been used in any article for more than seven days.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding hangon to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. You are now a Reviewer

[edit]

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, is currently undergoing a two-month trial scheduled to end 15 August 2010.

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under pending changes. Pending changes is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial. The list of articles with pending changes awaiting review is located at Special:OldReviewedPages.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Courcelles (talk) 17:53, 19 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for uploading File:Wikisanta.jpg. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the file. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their license and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 12:04, 7 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for File:Margaret Hassan.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Margaret Hassan.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Research survey invitation

[edit]

Greetings Solitude-

My name is Randall Livingstone, and I am a doctoral student at the University of Oregon, studying digital media and online community. I am posting to invite you to participate in my research study exploring the work of Wikipedia editors who are members of WikiProject: Countering Systemic Bias. The online survey should take 20 to 25 minutes to complete and can be found here:

https://oregon.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_cSHzuwaQovaZ6ss

Your responses will help online communication researchers like me to better understand the collaborations, challenges, and purposeful work of Wikipedia editors like you. In addition, at the end of the survey you will have the opportunity to express your interest in a follow-up online interview with the researcher.

This research project has been reviewed and approved by the Wikimedia Research Committee as well as the Office for Protection of Human Subjects at the University of Oregon. For a detailed description of the project, please visit its Meta page. This survey is voluntary, and your confidentiality will be protected. You will have the choice of using your Wikipedia User Name during the research or creating a unique pseudonym. You may skip any question you choose, and you may withdraw at any time. By completing the survey, you are providing consent to participate in the research.

If you have any questions about the study, please contact me via my Talk Page (UOJComm) or via email. My faculty advisor is Dr. Ryan Light. If you have any questions regarding your rights as a research participant, please contact the Office for Protection of Human Subjects at the University of Oregon.

Thank you very much.

Sincerely,

File permission problem with File:Small canal - Venice.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Small canal - Venice.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.

If you are the copyright holder for this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

 • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
 • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add OTRS pending to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as non-free fair use or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read the Wikipedia's image use policy.

Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described in section F11 of the criteria for speedy deletion. File permission problem with File:Rabbits-taking-a-nap.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Rabbits-taking-a-nap.jpg.

Hi, I need a native translation of a sentence, into Dutch:

[edit]
 1. The sentence is: "Welcome to the first stage, of the fourth international program of MAL's method, the internatinal training course of MAL, 2021"
 2. By "program" I mean, like in: "governmental program", or "educational program", and the like.
 3. By "stage" I mean: phase/part/step (Actually the "program" consists of a few stages).
 4. I know to use GoogleTranslate, but I need a native translation.
 5. Additionally, I would like to know how to pronounce the whole translated sentence (including "2021"), so please add also the transcription in IPA (or in Latin letters, as close to the original pronunciation as possible - if you are not familiar with IPA. Please mark also the stress, e.g. by adding an apostrophe before the stressed syllable (or by typing the stressed vowel in a capital letter).
